Here's some interesting information about an informative online quiz (with Biblical references included) which can help you brush up on your Bible knowledge. As you'll see below, if you forward it to someone else, it can also become a Bible study. -- Pastor Maylan Schurch

What follows is an e-mail I sent out in late April, 2010.

Hi, folks --

I just received the following e-mail this morning. First there's a letter from the president of the Adventist church in Wales, and then a description of an online interactive quiz on Adventism's 28 fundamental beliefs. Each question is multiple choice and comes with a clickable Scripture reference. I tried a few questions and it's really easy. You're instantly told whether your answer is correct.

Anyway, check it out. It seems like a good way for anyone from upper elementary age on up to review and learn about the Bible truths our church teaches.

This sounds like a fun Sabbath afternoon activity when it's raining.

THE EXPLANATORY E-MAIL: Dear Pastor or Webmaster

Over the last couple of years we have developed a website with the specific
aim of reinforcing the biblical basis for the 28 fundamental beliefs of the
Seventh-day Adventist church. It is located at: www.quiz28.org.

The site was developed in the Welsh Mission and has the full backing of the
British Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. It is completely church
owned and has no connection with any independent ministries. Articles about
it have appeared in a number of church publications - some of which are
included below - and two other Unions have asked about translating it into
other languages. A widget for netAdventist sites is available on the
European server, and possibly on the North American one as well.

We would be very grateful if you could have a look at the site and consider
including a link to it from your church website or promoting it in some
other way - particularly among young people.

Yours in His service

BRAND NEW BIBLE QUIZ LAUNCHED

A brand new web-based Bible quiz has been launched this week. Named "quiz28"
and located at the quiz is based directly on the
"Seventh-day Adventist Believe" book and features 28 different quizzes, each
one matching one of the 28 fundamentals beliefs of the Adventist faith.

The quiz is in multiple choice format with twenty questions for each subject
and five possible answers. This means that altogether it contains 28
subjects, 560 questions, and 2,800 answers!

The whole quiz can be completed just using a mouse - no keyboard is needed.
It is also arranged in such a way that every user scores 100% on each
subject! This is achieved by only letting users move from a question when
they've got it right. An advantage of this approach is that lessens are
learned as you go along rather than having to wait until the end of the
quiz.

The competitive element comes in through a timer. As soon as a user begins a
quiz the clock starts ticking. It only stops when the final question is
completed and at this stage the user is presented with his or her completion
time, and an authentication code which can be used to prove that the time is
genuine. In testing, times of less than three minutes have already been
recorded for certain subjects.

The quiz was written over the last year by Pastor John Surridge. "This kind
of project is what I like doing in my spare time as a hobby," he says. "The
coding is done in a combination of PHP, MySQL, HTML and JavaScript, but what
took the most time was researching the questions and thinking up imaginative
answers for the multiple choice section. Over the last year I have
thoroughly studied the 28 fundamental beliefs of the Adventist Church and it
has been a really helpful exercise. Even as a pastor it's surprising how
much you can forget if you don't keep studying and I would encourage all of
our members to re-visit our fundamental beliefs and remind themselves of
just how much sense they make."

"I see quiz28 being used by many different types of people," John continues.
"For those doing baptismal studies it can be a useful summary of each topic,
and it can also be useful preparation for some of our Sabbath School
lessons. What I'd really like to see though is people doing it just for fun
- particularly young people. I'd like to see them competing for the fastest
times and talking about it with their friends. We've already got the 'Follow
the Bible' project and if quiz28 can help to make Bible study enjoyable then
it's got to be a good thing."

"I can also see quiz28 making a contribution to our 'Year of Evangelism'. If
we can publicise the site and get members of the general public involved,
then they can learn something about our fundamental beliefs before they ever
step foot in an Adventist church. Obviously the quiz alone can't give them
the detail they need, but on completion of each quiz they are presented with
links to sites such as the Adventist Discovery Centre where they can enrol
on more in-depth courses."

The quiz28 website is now fully operational so why not try it out at
and tell your friends about it. Webmasters are welcome to
put links to quiz28 on their own sites. Any international webmasters who
would like to translate the whole site into another language should contact
the BUC Communication department for further details.

ONE THOUSAND BIBLE STUDIES IN TWO MONTHS

In its first two months of its operation the quiz28 website, based on the 28
fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church, has clocked up over
1,000 completed quizzes. According to the hit statistics, those taking part
have come from dozens of different countries all around the world, though
the majority of users have been in the United Kingdom.

Speaking soon after the 1,000 threshold was crossed, quiz designer John
Surridge said, "It has been great to see so many people taking these quizzes
because each one is a mini Bible study. They don't go into great depth but
they include the main texts for each of our fundamental beliefs and give
people building blocks which can be used for further studies."

For the first few weeks after the launch of the site promotion was mainly
done within the Adventist church, through newsletters and magazines, but
recently some public advertising has started as well. "Here in South Wales
we've printed over 5,000 advertising cards and have started delivering them
to homes close to the two Cardiff churches," John continued. "During the
week of the distribution we saw an increase in numbers on the site but it's
hard to tell if these were a direct result of the advertising."

Enquiries have come from Church Headquarters in other countries in Europe
asking to translate quiz28 into their own language. Two have already
started and it is anticipated that more will follow.

If you would like to print your own advertising cards for this quiz you can

TWO THOUSAND BIBLE STUDIES SO FAR THIS YEAR

Since its launch at the beginning of the year the Quiz28 website,
, has been steadily notching up Bible studies at an average
rate of about six studies per day. The Quiz28 site was developed in the
Welsh Mission as part of the "Follow the Bible" strategy. It has 28
different subjects to choose from - one for each of our fundamental beliefs
- and each subject has 20 multiple choice questions. The object is to
complete a subject as quickly as possible, with users encouraged to repeat
the same subject several times in order to gain a faster time.

"We all need to keep studying our fundamental beliefs to keep them fresh in
our minds," says Quiz28 author Pastor John Surridge, "and by going over the
subjects again and again we reinforce the things that we once learnt in our
baptismal classes."

Quiz28 also has an evangelistic purpose. When each quiz is completed, users
are encouraged to enrol on one of the Adventist Discovery Centre
courses or investigate other Bible
websites. In Wales more than 30,000 advertising cards have been distributed
and the site is being advertised on Google. Statistics from the site show
that approximately half of all the completed quizzes have been by people in
the UK, with the United States in second place followed by Australia, New
Zealand and South Africa. "These are only rough estimates," says Pastor
Surridge, "as these days it's not always easy to work out from an IP address
where someone is physically located. However, it does indicate that our
localised advertising strategy is having some effect."

Statistics on the popularity of the quiz subjects have highlighted some
interesting trends. The Sabbath, Creation, and Baptism are among the most
popular, whereas Stewardship, Spiritual Gifts and Unity in the Body of
Christ are among the least popular. You can check out the full popularity
list at: .

We would encourage as many Adventist churches as possible to promote the
Quiz28 website among their membership and publicise it in the community as
well. Artwork for advertising leaflets can be downloaded from the Welsh
Mission website at: . It is planned to
publish a Quiz28 widget for netAdventist sites in the next few weeks.
